Karter’s Freedom
Courage can be shown in many ways. Some people show it through their actions, some people show it through their words, but the most courageous people can show it without doing either. Karter Goodchild just turned four years old. He wasn’t even supposed to live to be four days old. Karter was born with severe spastic quadriplegia, a form of cerebral palsy. From the moment he was born, the doctors didn’t think he had any chance of surviving. At first, they said he wouldn’t survive a day. And then they said five days. And then they said
Leah’s Freedom
When you hear about the benefits of an adaptive bike, the first ones to come up are often the physical benefits. Motor function, physical strength, coordination and balance can all be improved through adaptive biking. But another benefit, which can sometimes be forgotten, is how adaptive bikes help kids be kids. Elissa Fioroto has been an occupational therapist for 23 years. She recognizes the physical benefits that adaptive bikes provide, but says for her daughter, Leah, the biggest benefits come in the form of inclusion. “I definitely think the bike is helping with her physical ability, but she absolutely
Jordan’s Freedom
How Jordan's Adaptive Bicycle Is Helping Him Find Success on The Basketball Court 14-year-old Jordan Pivirotto loves sports. His favorite is basketball. As the manager and a player on his middle school basketball team, he dedicates a lot of time to the sport. Jordan has autism and several global developmental delays. He receives a number of different therapies including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and most recently, therapy from riding his Freedom Concepts AS2000 adaptive bicycle. “This is the first bike he has actually been able to ride,” said Tony Pivirotto, Jordan’s dad. “On other bikes,
Bringing Inclusion To Kids With Physical Disabilities
The Believe It Foundation is Increasing Inclusion With Adaptive Bikes For more than 10 years, the Believe It Foundation has been helping children with physical disabilities feel included. Through programs such as Camp Hope, adaptive snow skiing, and most recently, the Believe It Bike Program, they make a huge difference in and around San Antonio, TX. Founder/Director Andrew McAllister has cerebral palsy and says the inspiration for the foundation came from his experiences as a child. “Growing up in a small community within San Antonio, people were really accepting of me. I was always included,” said McAllister.
Tallie’s Freedom
Tallie Lyons likes to be included. Whether it’s running errands with her parents or playing outside with her siblings, she always wants to be involved. But sometimes it’s a little harder for her than it is for other children. Tallie has spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy that mainly affects the lower extremities of the body. She requires a walker to get around but doesn’t let that discourage her. “She’s very determined when she feels like she wants to accomplish something,” said Christie Lyons, Tallie’s mother. “She wants to be involved in everything, and it’s hard to tell
